Southwest China hit by 5.7 quake

A 5.7-magnitude quake shook southwest China on Saturday on the border between the provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan, the US Geological Survey announced.


BEIJING : A 5.7-magnitude quake shook southwest China on Saturday on the border between the provinces of Yunnan and Sichuan, the US Geological Survey announced.

The new China News agency reported the quake as registering 6.1 without giving any details of damage or possible casualties.

The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 4.30 p.m. (0830 GMT), was around 30 kilometres (18 miles) southeast of Panzhihua in Sichuan, 161 kilometres northwest of Kunming, Yunnan's provincial capital, the USGS said.

A massive quake hit Sichuan province on May 12, leaving nearly 70,000 dead, with about 18,000 people still missing.
