NEW DELHI: South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Lee Jae-yong, the third-generation leader of Korea’s largest conglomerate and earlier jailed on corruption charges, came face-to-face for the first time during the Presidential term at the launch ceremony for Samsung Electronics’ new smartphone factory in Noida on Monday.

Samsung Electronics Vice-Chairman Lee is on his fourth business trip abroad after being released from jail in February to appeal bribery convictions and this is the first time Lee graced a public event. On the three prior business trips abroad, Lee stayed away from the public.

The only event that has been disclosed about Lee’s trip was his attendance at Noida event. Samsung already runs a factory in Noida but the newly added facility will double the company’s production of smartphones in India to 10 million units per month, making it the largest smartphone factory in the country.

Lee Jae-yong, who was a key figure in the scandal that ousted former South Korean leader Park Geun-hye following massive nationwide protests, was sentenced to five years in jail last year.
