South Africa cruise to 80/1 against India at lunch
Young Piyush Chawla celebrated his return to Test cricket by taking a wicket in his very first over as South Africa reached 80 for one at lunch.
Electing to bat, the South Africans were cruising along comfortably before the young leg-spinner plotted Neil Mckenzie's dismissal to provide the only scalp for the hosts who need to win the match to level the series 1-1.
The South African openers, Graeme Smith and McKenzie, played cautiously to give a solid start to the visitors before Chawla got rid of McKenzie with a gem of a flighted delivery and provided the much-needed breakthough.
The right-handed McKenzie jumped out of the crease to hit the spinner but was beaten by the flight and Mahendra Singh Dhoni was quick to complete the stumping.
The South African openers, who hold the world record for the opening partnership, put on 61 for the first wicket and looked quite comfortable on a Green Park track which, contrary to expectations, played quite easy in the opening session.
The dry and grass-less pitch, which was said to be tailor-made for the Indian spinners, had low bounce but it was not alarming enough to pose much problems for the batsmen.
