Sooner the better: Russia on N-deal

Russia, which is keen on expanding cooperation with India in the civilian nuclear sector, urged India to sign the nuclear deal saying "sooner is better then later.

NEW DELHI: Russia, which is keen on expanding cooperation with India in the civilian nuclear sector, urged India to sign the nuclear deal saying "sooner is better then later." Emphasising that Russia can only do business with India in the civilian nuclear sector after the nuclear deal is signed, Russian ambassador Vyacheslav Trubnikov said India would have to sign the deal at some point to integrate with the global community.

"We expect the completion of not very easy process of negotiation between India and US, India and IAEA and NSG. Sooner or later India will join international community sooner is better then later," said Mr Trubnikov. Interestingly the Russian ambassadors comments comes on the eve of the deliberations of the UPA-Left panel coordination meeting.

In a loaded statement, the Russian ambassador said in his personal opinion the nuclear deal was useful for India but hinted that there could be a price to pay for the deal. "In principle, the nuclear deal is useful for India. But of course it is for India to decide and at what price India is prepared to strike the deal," said the Russian ambassador who recently met external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Russia and France have already finalised drafts for civilian nuclear cooperation with India but the drafts are contingent on the NSG waiver and signing of IAEA safeguards agreement.
