Sonia terms debt waiver package a historic step
The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson and the Congress party chief, Sonia Gandhi on Sunday termed the UPA Government's debt waiver package to the farmers as a historic step.
While addressing the 'Kisan Rally' at the Ramlila Maidan, she praised the features of the Union Budget saying that it has kept interests of all sections of the society in mind here today.
While addressing the rally named 'Dhanyawad Abhinandan', Sonia Gandhi highlighted the 60,000 crore-rupee loan waiver package to farmers and other benefits announce by the Central Government in its General Budget proposals for the coming fiscal.
Emphasizing upon the need for strengthening internal security in the country, the UPA chairperson said the UPA Government is resolute to curb the negative forces that are creating disharmony among the people.
Charging the previous the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government for failing to contain terrorism, she said that terrorism is one of the biggest hurdle in the path of development.
Sonia Gandhi also said that millions of people were reaping benefits from the UPA Government flagship programme the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), adding that the scheme would soon be implemented in all districts of the country.
The Indian budget 2008-09 reads, "National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) will be rolled out to all 596 rural districts in India. Initially, we will provide Rs. 16,000 Crore (Rs. 160 Billion). Let there be no apprehension in any one's mind; as demand rises, more money will be provided to meet the legal guarantee of employment".
