Sonia leaves for China

Congress President Sonia Gandhi accompanied by her son and AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi left for China on a five-day visit.

NEW DELHI: Congress President Sonia Gandhi accompanied by her son and AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi on Thursday left for China on a five-day visit.

This will be Gandhi's first visit to China after taking over as party chief.

Senior party leader Karan Singh, AICC General Secretary Prithviraj Chavan and Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma are part of the high-level delegation accompanying Gandhi.

Gandhi is visiting the country at the invitation of President and the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) General Secretary Hu Jintao.

The Congress chief will be in the Chinese capital Beijing today and tomorrow. She will visit Xiang on October 27 and the gleaming metropolis of Shanghai on October 28.

Gandhi heads back for India on October 29.

Her visit would be the first by a foreign leader after the conclusion of CPC's National Congress, its most important five-yearly event, at which Hu was re-elected the party boss for another five-year term.

She had last visited China in 1996 and her planned trip in 2003 was cancelled.

The CPC has said it attaches "great importance" to Gandhi's visit and is apparently quite keen to host the Congress chief, who had visited China in 1988 along with her husband, late Rajiv Gandhi, when he was the Prime Minister, in a path-breaking event in Sino-India relations.
