Congress president Sonia Gandhi has relieved AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik of his Madhya Pradesh responsibilities, making JP Agarwal AICC incharge of the state. Wasnik, however, was retained in the organisational post.

The move set off buzz in the Congress circles as Wasnik's name has been discussed among the probables for Congress chief's post.

While AICC remained tight-lipped, a party member said: "The move is self-explanatory, but one has to watch out whether Wasnikji is being lined up, as party presidential poll approaches, to file nomination paper as a standby arrangement if Rahulji declines to be the party chief again and if Gehlotji is reluctant to take over the top post."

However, another AICC functionary said: "Mukulji has been relieved as MP incharge because he wants to lessen his work after becoming a Rajya Sabha member. Nothing else."
