NEW DELHI: Congress President Sonia Gandhi, the legal heir to Jawaharlal Nehru’s papers, has allowed free access to the official papers of India’s first PM for the years after 1946. Sonia’s decision, which was taken recently, will benefit research scholars and those interested in India’s freedom movement and the formative years of Independent India.

However permission will still be required the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The collection of Nehru’s papers, which are in the custody of The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library ( NMML), is divided into two parts : pre and post 1946. The pre-1946 papers are open to the public and the post-1946 papers can be examined after prior permission of the donor (Gandhi family) and the PMO.
