Sonia clears Karunakaran return sans son Murali

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday cleared the return of K Karunakaran to the party.

NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday cleared the return of K Karunakaran to the party. The decision comes after the three-term former chief minister formally conveyed to the high command his desire to return home from the NCP tent. A formal announcement will be made soon.

While many Karunakaran loyalists will accompany him in the return trip, his son K Muraleedharan will have to stay back in the NCP as the AICC is in no mood to re-admit him, a condition which is acceptable to the 90-year-old leader. He also will have to be sensitive to the emphasis of the PCC and the central leadership on avoiding revival of factionalism in the state Congress.

The decision to re-admit Mr Karunakaran was firmed up at a 10 Janpath meeting on Thursday between Ms Gandhi and Kerala PCC chief Ramesh Chennithala and CLP leader Ommen Chandy. On Wednesday, the two Kerala leaders held a meeting with AICC general secretary in-charge Mohsin Kidwai, A K Antony and Vayalar Ravi.

A senior AICC source told ET: “The dominant view of the Kerala party leaders and workers is in favour of Mr Karunakaran’s return”. While Mr Karunakaran could bring back his support base to the Congress, for the central leadership it is a way of fulfilling his desire of returning to the party.
