SRINAGAR: With CM Ghulam Nabi Azad in the arid Ladakh desert, Congress high command has directly opened its channels with PDP. Union Water Resources Minister Prof Saifuddin Soz has chipped in to neutralise the impact of Azad’s ‘misfire’ in which he retained Muzaffar Hussain Baig as finance and planning minister against the wishes of his parent party.
Sources said the high command has accepted the PDP decision and decided to cooperate. They have strongly advised Azad against entering into PDP’s internal party politics.
Party sources said top Congress leaders have talked to Mufti’s reiterating that coalition would continue as per the agreement reached between the two parties in presence of Manmohan Singh in October ’02. The decision to stay away from PDP’s internal problems was taken by Congress leaders group that takes care of J&K affairs.
PCC President Pirzada Sayeed was earlier summoned to Delhi for consultations. The group has discussed the possible alignment with NC but the major view was that it will prove suicidal in the forthcoming elections, sources in Delhi said.
Though the portfolios distributed earlier would not be changed, Congress is keen to retain the powerful finance ministry with the CM. Sources said Congress has offered rural development in lieu of this. Negotiations are on between Soz and Mufti in Srinagar as this report is filed and the proposal is unlikely to be turned down.
