Soni votes for the Taj Mahal

As admirers of the Taj Mahal root for its inclusion in the New Seven Wonders of the World, Union Culture Minister Ambika Soni on Friday cast her vote in favour of the monument of love, joining millions who have taken part in the campaign.

NEW DELHI: As admirers of the Taj Mahal root for its inclusion in the New Seven Wonders of the World, Union Culture Minister Ambika Soni on Friday cast her vote in favour of the monument of love, joining millions who have taken part in the campaign.
"Out of the total of 40 monuments globally, the Taj Mahal has entered the list of top 10 monuments of the world. Today, I am voting to see that it ranks number one in the world," Soni told reporters.
The Swiss non-profit group – The new 7 wonders Foundation -- has launched a global online, telephone and SMS poll to name the top seven marvels of the world and the Taj Mahal, a 17th century Mughal monument, finds itself among the top ten.
"It is being done by a private institution. But it has generated lots of excitement. Over 50 million people across the globe have voted in the campaign," she said after sending an SMS to vote for the Taj.
Soni, who smiled after a return message thanked her for supporting the power of beauty, said the recognition of Taj Mahal will help in increasing the tourist flow to the country.
"There are tangible benefits. Whenever people around the world will talk about the Taj Mahal, they will think of India. And whenever they will think about India, they will think about visiting the country," she said.
Soni had earlier appealed Indians to vote for the Taj.
She said though there was no "official support" for inclusion of the Taj in the list of the new seven wonders, yet she voted for the monument "as a citizen".
The poll result will be announced on July seven in Lisbon, Portugal.
