Some of the big concerns we all had have been addressed: Shashi Tharoor says PM Modi's meet with Trump is encouraging

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday said that the press statements by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump have been encouraging, adding that some of the biggest concerns have been addressed.

"So far, what we have seen from the press statements by the Prime Minister and President Trump are very encouraging. Some of the big concerns we all had have been addressed," Tharoor said.



He said that serious talks have been held on tariffs and the negotiations will conclude later this year. Tharoor added that the way illegal migrants were sent back is wrong, but the move by Trump is right.

"On the question of trade and tariffs, they have decided to sit down together and do a serious negotiation that will conclude by September-October.. On the illegal immigration issue, the only thing missing was the manner in which they were sent back. Otherwise, his stand was absolutely correct. These are misled youth who have been encouraged and induced to migrate illegally," the Congress MP said.


Tharoor further spoke on the defence ties between the two nations, terming US' commitment to sell F-35 aircraft "valuable".

"On the defence front, the commitment to sell us the F-35 stealth aircraft is very valuable because that is a state-of-the-art aircraft. I am very encouraged with the details received so far and I look forward to more details when the Prime Minister and his team are back. We have got all that we could have expected, except for an assurance in the way the migrants were sent back," Tharoor concluded.
