With the BJP winning in four states and the AAP in Punjab, non-BJP parties in Maharashtra are turning restive with some MLAs and senior leaders even contemplating switching parties while a few of them are already sending feelers to the BJP and AAP.

On Monday, former NCP Rajya Sabha MP Majeed Memon raised several eyebrows when he tweeted, "If Narendra Modi wins people's mandate and is also shown as the world's most popular leader, there must be some qualities in him or good work he may have done which the opposition leaders are unable to find."

Memon's tweet raised eyebrows as the NCP has been at loggerheads with the BJP and has been criticising the Modi government's policies. When contacted, Memon said that the tweet should not be 'misunderstood'. In response to a question, he said he was "not joining the BJP". While Memon said that his tweet was "misunderstood", other MVA leaders, especially from the Congress, are now mulling their future in the party.

"Being wiped out from states like Punjab in such a manner does lead to a lot of questioning and introspection about future. The Punjab results are quite depressing and there are many who are mulling their future in the party ," said a Congress leader.

"We lost power in Andhra, Telangana, UP, and we have never come back to power in these states. Now you have to add Punjab. At this rate, the party might literally be over by 2029. Several of our leaders believe that in Maharashtra, even if the three parties - Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena - fight together in the 2024 polls, the BJP might still be able to win," he said.

"Some top leaders from the Congress are in touch with us. We are taking our tim," said Preeti Menon, AAP's national executive member.
