BJP leader Kirit Somaiya alleged on Monday that Maharashtra’s rural development and labour minister Hasan Mushrif from the NCP and his family were involved in accumulating ill-gotten and benami assets of ₹127 crore. He said he has submitted documents in this regard to the Income Tax (IT) department. Mushrif, however, said he will sue Somaiya over the allegation.

The former BJP MP said he has submitted documents related to the family’s “dubious” financial transactions to the IT department and that he will also meet the Enforcement Directorate (ED) so that a joint probe can be launched.

Somaiya claimed that Mushrif and his family members were receiving crores of rupees from shell companies based in Kolkata that were defunct and also alleged that a sugar company controlled by them was being used to launder money. In July 2019, the IT department had carried out searches at the residence of Mushrif and a sugar mill controlled by his family. Referring to that raid, Mushrif said on Monday, “There has been an IT raid on me and our (sugar) factory already. They (IT) did not find anything untoward.”

Rubbishing Somaiya’s allegations, Mushrif said he will sue the BJP leader for ₹100 crore.
