Solapur Mayor pays Rs 1.15 lakh property tax in Rs 500 notes

MUMBAI: Solapur Mayor Sushila Abute used good old Rs 500 notes to pay three-year-old property tax dues of Rs 1.15 lakh.

The Congress politician deposited the notes at the municipal corporation office at Solapur yesterday. The amount also included dues her relatives owed besides Rs 1,605 as penalty.

The inclusion of the penalty amount may have been a slip up, Abute said. "I had not kept any dues pending. I was after the municipal officials to accept my payment," she added.

Tax collection officer R P Gaikwad said there was no question of waiving the penalty amount just because she is the Mayor.

Another civic official said most of Solapur residents who paid their outstanding tax used Rs 500 or Rs 1,000 notes.
