The farmer unions agitating against the three central farm laws have taken their battle to poll-bound West Bengal as the Union government is not paying heed to their demand of repealing the laws deregulating the sale and distribution of crops.

On Friday, a number of farmer leaders such as Balbir Singh Rajewal, Gurnam Singh Chaduni, Hanan Moolah reached Kolkata.

The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) leaders will tour the state and address four mahapanchayats in the next two days.

The SKM, the umbrella body of 40 farmer unions which is organising the protests, will organise the first mahapanchayat in Nandigram, the seat where the most important battle of the state is taking place between Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee and the BJP’s Shuvendu Adhikari.

It has picked this constituency to attract more attention to the farmers’ issues.
