Sixty thousand people affected by Malda flood
Sixty thousand people living in the unprotected area between the river bank and the dyke have been hit by floods in Malda district of West Bengal following rise in the water level of the Ganga and Fulhar.
Among the affected were people living in the low-lying land of Mahananda Tola, Bilaimari and Manikchak blocks.
District magistrate Chittaranjan Das said relief materials have been kept ready and a control room has been opened in the district headquarter, he said.
BDOs have been asked to keep a watch on the situation, he said.
Two more blocks in the catchment areas of Ganga and Fulhar were put on flood alert raising the number of such blocks to seven, official sources said.
The irrigation department on Monday had put five blocks on flood alert following rise in the water level of the Ganga.
The blocks are Ratua-I, Harishchandrapur - II, Manikchak, Kaliachak-I, Kaliachak-II, Kaliachak-III and Englishbazar.
The district nmagistrate said work was going on at war-footing at Bhaluka area of Hrishchandrapur block where the distance between the bank and the dyke has been reduced to 20 feet due to erosion by Fulhar.
