All these six constituencies are going for by-polls as their former MLAs have fought Lok Sabha elections and got elected in 2024 general elections. Former Trinamool Congress legislator from Sitai Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia is currently the party’s Lok Sabha member from Cooch Behar constituency and thus the seat went vacant.
Former Trinamool legislator from Naihati Partha Bhowmik got elected as Lok Sabha member from Barrackpore.
Another Trinamool Congress legislator from Haroa assembly constituency Late Haji Nurul Islam got elected from Basirhat Lok Sabha as the party candidate in the general elections this year.
Actress-turned-politician June Malia won with Trinamool ticket from Medinipur assembly constituency in 2021. She got elected as LOK Sabha MP from Medinipur Lok Sabha. Another Trinamool Congress legislator from Taldangra Arup Chakraborty got elected in the Lok Sabha from Bankura constituency this year.
The by-polls are extremely crucial for both Trinamool Congress and BJP in the backdrop of rape and murder of PGT junior doctor of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata.
