Singur-type protests will stall growth: Nath
Even as the Centre is yet to breath a word against the Mamata Banerjee-sponsored anti-industry protests in West Bengal’s Singur, commerce minister Kamal on Monday said that such protests would stall growth.
Mr Nath said that such imbroglio vitiates the atmosphere for investments especially important for a state like West Bengal. He added that the entire country was looking forward to the launch of Nano. The problems should be sorted out soon, Mr Nath said.
The commerce minister requested all political parties to realise the importance of investments and resolve the issue for the sake of the state. He pointed out that such incidents lower the confidence level of investors.
Mr Naths statement clearly indicates an unease among a section of the government to remain silent towards antiindustry moves by political parties. SP leader Amar Singh had travelled to Singur to express solidarity with the Trinamool agitation.
Trinamool Congress chief, who is unwilling to give up the agitation, has said that the government should return the land to the farmers. Responding to an invitation from chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee for talks on the issue, Ms Banerjee said that a solution will have to be acceptable to agitating farmers.
As a responsible Opposition leader you must appreciate that the quick implementation of the project is very important for the state. You must be wanting that this project is implemented in this state.
We are facing a critical situation when many other states have offered the Tatas to shift their small car plant from Singur, which we cannot afford to lose, the chief minister said in his letter to Ms Banerjee.
Ms Mamata Banerjee is leading an indefinite protest in Singur, demanding return of a portion of land to farmers.
