'SIMI's Kerala links being probed'

Kerala police was probing the activities of banned SIMI in the state, where the outfit had conducted some camps in the past, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has said.

ALAPPUZHA (KERALA): Kerala police was probing the activities of banned Students Islamic Movements of India (SIMI) in the state, where the outfit had conducted some camps in the past, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said here this evening.

The state police was aware of the camp conducted by SIMI at Wagamon in Kottayam district and the investigation in the case was on, the Minister said, while replying to reporters' queries on the revelations of Gujarat police in the wake of arrest of some SIMI activists, believed to be behind the recent Ahmedabad blasts.

When action was taken against SIMI activists, several human right groups came out, arguing that the arrest involved human rights violation and harassment of minorities. These human right activists should realise the true intentions of these outfits, he said.

The police at Mundakkayam in Kottayam district recently registered a case based on reports that SIMI had conducted a camp at Wagamon, which was said to have been attended by about 30 activists from different states.
