GANGTOK: Sikkim remained cut off from the rest of the country for the fifth consecutive day today as the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) continued to block the arterial NH 31 A, the lifeline of the mountain state, as part of its indefinite agitation for a separate state.

Barring some army vehicles and those carrying students and patients, no other passenger and goods vehicles plied on the highway between Sikkim and Siliguri/Darjeeling, police said.

The state government has requested West Bengal to provide escort to the Sikkim-bound vehicles carrying goods and passengers upto Rangpo checkpost so that the life of its people was unaffected, the sources added.
