Sikkim criticised for transfer of surplus power to eastern region
The NERPM, a representative body on Saturday slammed Sikkim, a member of theNEC for transferring its surplus power to the eastern region and other parts of the country.
Sikkim, being a constituent of the NEC, received funds for development of its resources from the NEC and other central government departments meant for the development of the north eastern states, but it has not been reciprocal toward the needs of other states of the region, NERPM chairman and Assam's Power minister Pradyut Bordoloi told reporters here.
It has been seen that the power generated from hydro projects in Sikkim as also from Bhutan were being fed to the eastern and other regions of the country though the NE states were facing severe power shortage, he said.
it was needless to say that the himalayan state, a member of the north-east council (nec) since 2006, should transfer its surplus power to meet the electricity demands of other states of the region, Bordoloi said.
The NERPM chairman also took a dig at Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, who holds the power ministry, for his absence from the two-day meet of the forum despite being the host.
He said the deliberations on the power situation in the north-eastern states should have been more fruitful if Chamling had shared his vision on the issue with colleagues from other states.
