Sikh holy book row: Accused Rupinder Singh discharged from hospital

CHANDIGARH: The accused in the desecration incident at Bargari, who was hospitalised here in view of spinal injury, was discharged today, police said.

Rupinder Singh, who was hospitalised at PGIMER here for treatment of a spinal injury on October 27, has been discharged from the hospital and shifted to Faridkot jail, police said.

A court in Faridkot had sent Rupinder Singh and his brother Jaswinder Singh, both accused of being involved in the desecration of a holy book at Bargari, to judicial custody till November 11.

The two had refuted the allegations of Punjab police and pleaded their innocence. Their parents and other members of Sikh community had claimed that they had been framed up in the case.

Punjab was in turmoil for over a week after over eight incidents of desecration of holy book were reported, with Sikh protesters blocking road traffic at several places in the state.

Police have so far arrested six people in connection with the cases of desecration.
