Sikh groups clash in Vienna shrine, 30 hurt
About 30 people were wounded, nine of them seriously, as rival factions in the Sikh community clashed in a gurdwara here, police said on Sunday.
Fighting broke out at around 1:30 pm (local time) when a group of Sikhs opposed to a sermon by Shri Guru Ravidas Sabha, visiting from India, produced knives and a gun inside the shrine. Six people did not agree (with the sermon). One drew a firearm, the others knives. They were overpowered by members of the community and seriously injured, police spokesman Michael Takacs said. One victim was fighting for his life, he added.
Police recovered at least three spent cartridges inside the shrine, where 200 people had gathered for the service. The violence has its roots in a long-standing religious dispute, a witness, Jasuf Kalder, said. Worshippers of the shrine in the Austrian capitals Vienna-Rudolfsheim district had disputes with other gurdwaras in the city since it opened in 2005, and these other communities were opposed to the gurus sermon, said Kalder.
All the people implicated have been arrested, a police spokesman said. Radio reported five arrests.
