As a major boost to his home district ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's budget on Friday unveiled a host of schemes and projects for Mysuru.

This is viewed by independent political watchers as both a reward to his place of birth as well as an attempt to wrest the Mysuru-Kodagu Lok Sabha seat from the BJP in the upcoming parliamentary polls.

The CM has announced an additional flyover along the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated a little under a year ago in the district. A peripheral ring road has also been proposed around Mysuru city to ease traffic congestion, said the CM.

In addition to these, Rs 43 crore will be released for the extension of the runway of Mysuru airport this year. The CM has also announced the development of integrated townships near the city, along with new textile parks under public-private-partnerships.

The government also announced an allocation of Rs 54 crore for the construction of Mysuru Maharani Women’s Science College and Rs 116 crore for the construction of Maharani Arts And Commerce College Hostel, as well as proposed to establish new science centers and planetariums in the district.

For the CM’s own assembly seat Varuna, the budget proposed to establish a government tool room and training centre (GTTC) in collaboration with the Vishweshwaraiah Technical University.

Simha has represented the district in the Lok Sabha for the past decade, after he won it from Congress’ Adagur Vishwanath in 2009. The Congress will be looking to offset the BJP’s influence in the district after its victory in the region in the assembly polls last May, winning five out of the seven assembly seats, leaving two for the JDS, and none for the BJP.
