Shyam Saran could be next envoy to US

Prime Minister's Special Envoy on nuclear deal Shyam Saran could be the next Ambassador to the US, succeeding Ronen Sen whose tenure is all set to end in March.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister's Special Envoy on nuclear deal Shyam Saran could be the next Ambassador to the US, succeeding Ronen Sen whose tenure is all set to end in March.

Saran, who retired in September 2006 as Foreign Secretary, is understood to be a strong contender for the prestigious assignment, sources said here today.

A final decision on the appointment of the Ambassador is expected to be taken shortly, the sources said.

The assignment is crucial considering the fact that the civil nuclear deal is yet to be concluded and able diplomacy would be required to see it through in the face of stiff opposition by some sections.

64-year-old Sen, who has been in Washington since August 2004, is all set to return home as the government is unlikely to give him any extension.

The key factor favouring 62-year-old Saran is his involvement with the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, the most important initiative between the two countries so far.

As Foreign Secretary, Saran was India's key negotiator for the deal with the US since the discussions began in July 2005.

Even after his superannuation, his services on the issue were utilised by the government which appointed him as the Special Envoy on the nuclear deal.
