Should rest of state suffer to light up city?

MERC Sets April 12 Date To Decide On Tata Power Diverting More Power To City From State Power Utility

MUMBAI: Should Mumbai be fed power meant for other parts of the state? The issue of Tata Power diverting more power from the state power utility to keep lights on in Mumbai will be heard by the power sector regulator on April 12. The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has issued notices to all concerned for the hearing, MERC secretary Malini Shankar told ET.

The MERC is responding to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company’s (Maha Vitaran) petition filed on April 3 seeking directives restraining overdrawal by Tata Power Company (TPC). Maha Vitaran also wants do direct the state load dispatch centre to strictly enforce the Tata Power’s electricity dispatch and drawl schedule.

The state utility recently has accused Tata Power of drawing an excess power to supply to Mumbai. The Maha Vitaran’s contention was that the Tata Power is avoiding buying power from the market since it has access to the state’s less expensive power.

An age old agreement makes binding for the state power utility to supply electricity to Tata Power whenever the latter faces power shortfall for Mumbai. Tata Power has been supplying electricity in Mumbai area for over eight decades. Along with domestic consumers it also supplies power to industrial and commercial establishments including railways, refineries, ports and other various installations.

A section of the state government now wants the said agreement to be written. “We shouldn’t be forced to supply Tata Power when we ourselves don’t have enough electricity,” a state power utility official said.
