Shiv Sena objects govt's move to beautify Reis Magos Fort
Beautification of a five century-old Reis Magos Fort has gathered the controversy with Shiv Sena questioning Goa government's decision to refurbish it with the funds from a British trust.
"Why should Goa government beg the British trust? If Goa has no money let them seek it from the Central government. And still if they can't manage Shiv Sena is ready to sponsor the project," Goa Shiv Sena chief Upendra Gaonkar said.
Reis Magos Fort, constructed in 15th century, is getting a facelift with the Britain-based Lady Helen Hamlyn Trust sponsoring the project.
The refurbishing work is on full swing with Goa-based nationally renowned architect Gerard Da Cunha drawing a special plan which will covert the fort into a tourist spot.
The fort, which is tucked just opposite Panaji city across Mandovi river, is one of the oldest structures in the state constructed during Adil Shah's regime in the state. It was later used to house Portuguese army and post-liberation was utilised as a jail till recently by Goa government.
Shiv Sena, which has criticised the State government on the renovation project, has petitioned State Archives and Archeology Department listing their grievances.
"We don't want the character of the fort to be changed. It should remain the same. Not a single stone should be displaced from there," Gaonkar said.
