Shibu Soren’s son threatens to derail UPA alliance

Less than a week after Congress appeared to have finalised the seat-sharing pact with its alliance partners in Jharkhand, JMM has sounded a note of warning.

NEW DELHI: Less than a week after Congress appeared to have finalised the seat-sharing pact with its alliance partners in Jharkhand, JMM sounded a note of warning. The agreement, it noted, was predicted on the gameplan of reinstalling Shibu Soren, or any one of his nominees, as chief minister.

No UPA alliance is possible in Jharkhand as long as the chief ministership of Jharkhand does not go either to Guruji (as Shibu Soren is fondly called by his admirers) or any party MLA, JMM general secretary Durga Soren, son of Shibu Soren, told a news agency here on Friday. He said his party was ready to go it alone in the forthcoming polls if the condition was not fulfilled.

The JMM leaders assertion threatens to put a spanner in the Congress gameplan to win a significant number of Lok Sabha seats from the state. UPA had fared very well in the 2004 general election, bagging 13 of the 14 seats. Congress tally alone was five while its alliance partners, JMM, RJD and CPI, walked way with the remaining eight seats. BJP had to rest content with a mere one.

Congress leadership had earlier this week worked out a seat-sharing deal with its alliance partners in Jharkhand. Working on a sitting-getting formulation, it was agreed that the Congress would contest six seats (Godda, Dhanbad, Ranchi, Singhbhum-ST, Khunti-ST and Lohardaga-ST), JMM four (Rajmahal-ST, Dumka-ST, Giridih and Jamshedpur) and RJD two (Palamau-SC and Chatra). The fate of the two remaining seats, Hazaribagh and Koderma, was left undecided.

We rescued the Central government every time it sought our help, but we were back-stabbed. This time we are not going to settle for anything less than the chief ministership of the state, Durga Soren said. The demand is unlikely to be conceded as RJD and Congress are not ready to succumb to the pressure.
