Russian fifth seed Maria Sharapova won the first set of the Australian Open final against fourth seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia 7-5 Saturday.

MELBOURNE: Russian fifth seed Maria Sharapova won the first set of the Australian Open final against fourth seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia 7-5 Saturday.

Sharapova went ahead a break in the fifth game and Ivanovic broke back in the eighth but could not stop the Russian breaking her again four games later and serving out the set after 49 minutes.

Sharapova is bidding for her third Grand Slam title, while Ivanovic is yet to claim a major after losing in last year's French Open decider.
