Sharad Pawar keeps NCP merger buzz alive
Speculation surrounds a possible reunion of the Nationalist Congress Party factions. Sharad Pawar's ambiguous statements have stirred the political pot. Allies express concern, while Ajit Pawar's camp downplays the likelihood of talks. Ajit's fact...

The buzz began after Pawar Sr remarked that some leaders in his faction were keen on reconciliation. Earlier, on May 9, he had informally told reporters in Pune, "If the reunion happens, it should not surprise others."
His comments have caused unease within allies Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray and the Congress. However, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP faction has reacted coolly, downplaying the possibility of any talks.
Sources from the Ajit camp said no discussions have taken place and claimed Sharad Pawar was floating the idea of reunification merely to keep his own flock together.
"We are in power, and many from their faction are already in touch with us-some have even joined. This merger talk is just to hold the rest back. I don't see it happening unless the leadership issue is settled," said a leader from the Ajit camp.
In essence, Ajit's faction is seeking a public endorsement from Sharad Pawar that Ajit will lead the party in the future-an anointment that would lend greater legitimacy to Ajit Pawar's leadership.
