Sharad has poisonous ideas on women's bill
JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav on Friday once again displayed unbounded thirst for ridiculous dissent against Women's Reservation Bill by threatening to consume poison in Lok Sabha if legislation was pushed through.
The JD(U) leader, while participating in the discussion on the motion of thanks to the Presidential address, reiterated his opposition to the bill unless it incorporated his partys quota-within-quota demand to accommodate the OBCs.
It was exactly 12 years ago that Mr Yadav, who was then an important member of the ruling United Front government, had thwarted the attempts of the then prime minister H D Deve Gowda to get the bill tabled in the Lok Sabha, arguing that the provision would only favour partkati mahilayen (women with short hair).
Mr Yadav, who's now the JD(U) president, used the same platform to reiterate his opposition to bill seeking to empower women. "We may not have the numbers, but I will consume poison and die here, but will not allow the passage of the bill," he told a stunned House.
The JD(U) leader accused the Manmohan Singh government and Congress of resorting to "tokenism" to win over the constituency, rather than solving their issues.
"Congress has been resorting to tokenism by appointing women to the post of President and Lok Sabha Speaker," Mr Yadav said adding that the real need was to liberate women who belong to the backward and most backward classes. The JD(U) leader's dramatic outburst showed that the anti-womens reservation group, comprising parties such as JD(U), RJD, the Samajwadi Party and the Shiv Sena, would go all out to thwart the passage of the Constitutional amendment bill.
SP too expressed its determination to put roadblocks in the bill's forward movement. "We will discuss the bill threadbare in our party meeting soon and take a stand on it there," party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav told newspersons in Parliament on Thursday.
