NEW DELHI: Shankar Aggarwal today took over as Secretary in the Ministry of Urban Development.

Housing and Poverty Alleviation Secretary Anita Agnihotri was looking after the job after the retirement of Aggarwal's predecessor, former UD Secretary Sudhir Krishna, last month.

A member of the Indian Administrative Service (1980 batch) belonging to Uttar Pradesh cadre, Aggarwal was Secretary, Union Ministry of Women and Child Development before his posting in the UD Ministry, according to a release.

Aggarwal did his Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics and Communication) from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkie, and Masters in Technology (Computer Technology) from IIT, Delhi before joining the service.

Aggarwal has held several important positions in the governments of Uttar Pradesh and at the Centre dealing with Housing and Urban Development, Information Technology, Finance, Energy, Technical Education, Small Scale Industries, Transport, Defence during his 35 years of service.
