Shahjahan Sheikh to be arrested in 7 days, says TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh

Senior TMC leader Kunal Ghosh has announced that Shahjahan Sheikh, a prominent member of the party, will be arrested within the next seven days. Sheikh has been accused of sexual atrocities and land grabbing in the Sandeshkhali area of West Bengal. This announcement follows the clarification from the Calcutta High Court that there is no stay on Sheikh's arrest.

"About the arrest of Shahjahan Sheikh, Abhishek Banerjee is correct. The matter was stuck in the legal tangle of the court. The opposition was doing politics using this opportunity. Thanks to the High Court today for clarifying the matter and allowing the police to take action. Shajahan will be arrested within seven days," Ghosh said in a post on X.

Ghosh expressed his agreement with TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee's earlier statement regarding the legal complexities surrounding Sheikh's arrest. He also thanked the High Court for clarifying the matter, which will now allow the police to take action.

The court has directed that Sheikh, along with the Enforcement Directorate, the Central Bureau of Investigation, and the state home secretary, be involved in the suo moto matter initiated in response to the allegations of sexual atrocities and land grabbing in the Sandeshkhali area.

The Sandeshkhali area, located on the borders of the Sundarbans and about 100 kilometers from Kolkata, has been witnessing unrest for over a month. This unrest stems from the accusations against Sheikh and his supporters of land grabbing and sexual assault. Sheikh has been evading authorities since the mob attack on Enforcement Directorate officials on January 5.
