PATNA: Already facing trial in a number of criminal cases, controversial RJD MP from Siwan Mohammad Shahabuddin suffered the first major blow when the special court of the first class judicial magistrate Mr V V Gupta in Siwan convicted him in a case related to attack on CPI-ML office at Khurwabad and abduction of its district unit secretary Keshav Baitha in 1998.

It is for the first time that the MP, facing nearly 40 criminal cases, has been convicted and the quantum of sentence will be pronounced on friday. He is being tried in a special court which has been set up in the Siwan Division jail. The incarcerated MP is currently lodged there.

The MP has been convicted under section 147, 342, 448 and 504 of IPC in connection with the Khurwabad case in which he and his armed supporters were alleged to have exploded bombs a the party office and assaulted the CPI-ML secretary Mr Baitha.

The FIR was filed on October 7,1998, on the statement recorded by Baitha.

The MP is facing other criminal cases related to murder, abduction, violation of foreign exchange act, arms act, power theft, wild life violation act etc. Legal experts say the MP could face jail sentence from 6 months to 2 years in this case in which he has been convicted.
