New Delhi: Union home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday held an extensive discussion with his Bangladeshi counterpart Asaduzzaman Khan, who is on a three-day visit to India. This was Shah’s first interaction with a foreign leader after assuming charge as home minister.

Following talks, Shah said in a Facebook post: “Had extensive discussion on the bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh.”

India and Bangladesh would like to further develop their bilateral ties by focusing on issues like counterterrorism, capacity-building, increased cooperation between security agencies, border management, countering fake currency and drughuman trafficking, Rohingya refugees and consular access.

Along with Khan, Bangladesh railways minister Nurul Islam Sujan is also visiting India. Earlier in the day, Sujan met his Indian counterpart Piyush Goyal at Rail Bhavan.

Bangladesh home minister is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday morning.

Former home minister Rajnath Singh had co-chaired the sixth meeting of India-Bangladesh home minister-level talks in Dhaka in July last year. They had witnessed signing of the Revised Travel Arrangement 2018 (RTA 2018), amending the earlier RTA 2013 for further liberalising the visa regime between the two countries, including enhanced duration for employment and student visas.
