AMRITSAR: Referring to a case in Britain where a schoolgirl was recently banned from wearing a 'kada' (steel bracelet) in the classroom, the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee has asked prime ministers of India and Britain to protect religious rights of the Sikhs.

In two different letters to Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh and Gordon Brown, SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar expressed deep concern over "racial discrimination."

He referred to the Aberdare Girls School in South Wales banning 14-year-old Sarika Watkin Singh from attending class while wearing her 'kada.'

Makkar alleged the school authorities were ignorant of the Race Relations Act 1976, Freedom of Religion-Provisions of the Equality Act 2006 and Human Rights Act 1998.
