SEZ Act biggest real estate scam in India: JD(U)

NEW DELHI: The JD-U on Monday flayed the ruling UPA for its policy on Special Economic Zones (SEZ) calling it "the biggest real estate scam in India" and sought immediate suspension of implementation of the "anti-farmer Act".
Rubbishing Congress President Sonia Gandhi's remarks on SEZ in the recently concluded Chief Minister's Conclave in Nainital as an "eyewash", JD(U) leader Shard Yadav said "The SEZ Act is anti-farmer as it aims to rob farmers of their fertile land for the benefit of corporate land mafia."
"If Sonia Gandhi is so concerned about the plight of our farmers, why doesn't she take concrete steps to stop the exploitation of farmers," he said addressing a demonstration in the capital.
Terming the SEZ policy as "anti-farmer" and "anti-national", Yadav accused the Centre and various state governments of working in collusion with the corporate land mafia, leading to "wastage of fertile land for high-tech cities and SEZs."
In a memorandum submitted to President A P J Abdul Kalam, Yadav along with Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Apna Dal leader Sone Lal Patel demanded a serious debate on the issue in and outside Parliament.
"It is our firm opinion that SEZ is a real estate scam and has nothing to do with export promotion and foreign capital inflow... Even on theoretical basis, the SEZ Act is a heavy burden on our economy," they said in the memorandum.
