Seven parties ask Centre to provide humanitarian aid to Palestinians

NEW DELHI: The Manmohan Singh Government on Thursday came under pressure from the newly formed anti-Congress, anti-BJP group to step in to help Palestinians in the Gaza Strip get access to humanitarian aid. Seven parties petitioned Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding that the government take up the issue with Israel and the United Nations.

The government of India should not just condemn the Israeli action but intervene diplomatically to see that the aggression is ended. It must take up with Israel and the United Nations the question of allowing food and humanitarian assistance into the Gaza Strip, the first joint letter by the four Left parties, AIADMK, TDP and JD(S) said.

Signatories to the letter included Prakash Karat, A B Bardhan, Jayalalithaa, Chandrababu Naidu and former prime minister H D Devegowda.

They accused the government of choosing to be virtually silent on this ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people who it said has always backed India.

The UN Secretary General, the Arab League and many governments and organisations have condemned this act and demanded the immediate end to the Israeli attacks and their withdrawal from the Gaza Strip area and restoration of the normal procedure of allowing medicines and humanitarian assistance into Gaza, the letter said.

The government had issued two statements on the Israeli strike on the Gaza Strip condemning the attacks. Though the first one was a muted one saying it was aware of the firing, it issued another one condemning the attack and asking Israel to stop the aggression.

The newly-formed group said that Israel has targeted hospitals, mosques, universities and schools and the Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert has already said the attacks from land, air and sea will continue until the democratically-elected Hamas regime is liquidated.

The CPM had earlier issued a statement demanding that the government end Indias military ties with Israel following the air strikes on the Gaza strip, describing it as a shameful policy. The party said its relations with Israel will harm Indias image among the countries of West Asia. It had also said that Israel was emboldened in its aggression by the backing it received from the United States.
