Sethusamudram project beneficial to nation: Vaiko

CHENNAI: MDMK, an ally of the AIADMK, today said using the name of religion to stop the Sethusamudram project was totally 'unacceptable' to it.

The AIADMK and the BJP had opposed the implementation of the project if the Ram Sethu or Adams Bridge was demolished as the bridge was believed to have constructed by Lord Ram and demolition of the bridge would hurt the sentiments of Hindus.

MDMK Chief Vaiko told reporters at the suburban Ambattur that Sethusamudram project was beneficial not only to Tamil Nadu but also to the country.

'Any attempt to stop the project, using the name of religion is totally unacceptable to us', he said.

He said the UPA government at the Centre and the DMK government in the state should make arrangements for despatch of food and medicines to Sri Lankan Tamils, who were subjected to an economic blockade by the island republic.

He welcomed the Tamil Nadu government ordinance providing for 3.5 per cent reservation to Muslims and Christians in the state.
