Serial blasts in Assam leave 6 dead, over 34 injured

GUWAHATI: Assam has been rocked by serial explosions on Monday on the eve of Ulfa���s rising day. While one explosion took place in the busy Maligaon area of Guwahati, another explosion took place in a market place in Dekhiajuli in Tezpur. The Guwahati explosion damaged the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) office and BSNL office. In three explosions, 6 people were killed and over 34 injured.

Karbi Longri National Liberation Front (KLNLF) militants also triggered an explosion in Jengpha in central Assam's Karbi Anglong district. The Border Security Force has a camp there. No one was injured in the blast.

In Maligaon, six people are killed and over 31 injured while in Dekhiajuli three people are injured. According to the police in Guwahati, the bomb was planted in a motorbike in Dekhiajuli.

An irate mob in the Maligaon area was engaged in heated exchanges with the police. People of the area were not happy with the delayed arrival of the ambulance and fire brigade.

The explosion has damaged dozens of motorbikes in Guwahati. DIG, central-western range of Assam police, G.P. Singh said it appeared that the explosion was triggered by an improvised explosive device. "We are investigating," he assured.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was scheduled to address an election rally in Diphu on Tuesday. However, it was cancelled following a bandh call by KLNLF.
