Serial blasts claim 12 lives in Uttar Pradesh

Three serial blasts rocked civil courts in Lucknow, Faizabad and Varanasi. While four persons were killed in the Faizabad blast, seven were killed in Varanasi.

LUCKNOW: At least twelve persons were killed and over a dozen injured in serial blasts that rocked Lucknow, Faizabad and Varanasi on Friday.

While four persons were killed in the Faizabad blast, seven were killed in the Varanasi blast. The death toll is likely to rise in both the blasts.

In the state capital, the blast took place when a bomb kept in a cycle exploded, sources said adding the intensity of the blast here was not much.

Bomb disposal squads have been pressed into service in the three districts and were conducting extensive searches of court premises, police said.

Rescue work is going on in full swing, according to the Inspector-General of Lucknow. A high level meeting is taking place in Lucknow to respond to the situation.

A series of terrorist bombings have ripped across India in the past two years. In August, a pair of explosions killed 43 people in the southern city of Hyderabad. In July 2006, bombs in seven Mumbai commuter trains killed more than 200 people.

Police named no immediate suspects in the Friday explosions, but bombings are commonly blamed on Pakistan-based Muslim militants hoping to create tensions between India's Hindu majority and Muslim minority.
