Senthil Balaji's remand extended till March 18

A sessions court here on Wednesday extended former Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji's remand till March 18. He was arrested by the ED in June last year in connection with a money laundering case. Principal Sessions Judge S Alli, before whom the DMK leader was produced by the prosecution through video-conferencing from the Central Puzhal Prison here, extended his judicial custody till March 18.

The judge also posted to that day, the hearing on a petition filed by Balaji, seeking his discharge him from the case. Senior counsel C Aryama Sundaram, appearing for Balaji, sought time to make his submissions.

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court ordered notice to the Enforcement Directorate on a revision petition filed by Senthil Balaji, challenging an order of the local court dismissing his petition seeking deferring the trial in the money laundering case.


A division bench comprising Justices M S Ramesh and Sunder Mohan posted to April 25, further hearing of the petition, after hearing arguments from senior counsel Mukul Rahotgi and S Prabakaran, appearing for Balaji.

Balaji was arrested on June 14, 2023 by the ED in connection with a money laundering case linked to a cash-for-jobs scam when he was the Transport Minister during an earlier AIADMK regime.
