Sena vows to waive farmers’ loans if elected to power
The Assembly elections in the state are scheduled only in October 2009. But that didn’t stop Shiv Sena working president Uddhav Thackeray from announcing poll promises.
“The Shiv Sena will waive farmers’ loans in Maharashtra if we come to power,” Thackeray Jr proclaimed at a rally at Nagpur on Sunday. As part of the party’s ‘Deta ka Jata’ (Give or Go) agitation to highlight farmers’ plight, Mr Thackeray said complete loan waiver was the only solution to farmers’ problems and the Sena will be with the farming community till the government announces a complete waiver. “Farmers did not get remunerative prices for their produce and this was causing difficulties,” he said.
Criticising Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, he said the NCP leader was no more interested in the welfare of the farmers. “If he is talking about loan waiver, then what prevents him from doing so,” he asked.
He it’s because of the impending general election that the UPA government was thinking about a loan waiver scheme for Maharashtra farmers.
Mr Thackeray said the Sena is planning to intensify the agitation across the state in the coming months. He called upon the farmers to pull down the Democratic Front (DF) government for its failure to provide succour to them.
The leaders of the Congress and the NCP, constituents of the DF, were not bothered about Maharashtra, and were, therefore, rushing to Gujarat for the Assembly polls there, he said.
