MUMBAI: Rajya Sabha MP and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut was on Thursday convicted in a defamation case and sentenced to simple imprisonment of 15 days by a metropolitan magistrate court in Mumbai.

Raut was also fined Rs 25,000 in the case filed by Medha Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya. Raut later got bail and the court also suspended his sentence for 30 days so that he can appeal in a higher court against the sentence.

The case pertained to 2022 when Raut had claimed that Medha and her husband were allegedly involved in a public toilet scam.

Medha had then filed a case of defamation against the Shiv Sena UBT l leader.

On Thursday, metropolitan magistrate Aarti Kulkarni while holding Raut guilty of defamation held that he had "shattered the dignity of the woman" and since he was a member of the Rajya Sabha "he should have upheld the dignity of the House and be more careful and responsible" before making such statements.
