Sena may come to PM's aid on N-deal
Having publicly rebuked the Left on their stand on Indo-US nuclear deal, the Shiv Sena has indicated that it may come to the Manmohan Singh government’s rescue on the issue.
The move will see the party on the same side with its political rival the Samajwadi Party. The Senas statement has come at a time when the Congress is desperately seeking support from new parties in the wake of threats by the Left parties to withdraw support over the nuke deal.
Mr Raut said his party considers that the deal is in the interest of the country and needs to be saved. In the same breath he hastened to add that his party would not do anything that would jeopardise the NDA of which the Sena is an important constituent.
We have been the oldest allies of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the NDA along with the Akali Dal. The NDA cannot be thought of without the Sena, he told mediapersons in Mumbai when asked whether the party was ready to do business with the Congress-led UPA. In the past Sena had supported the UPA by backing its presidential nominee Pratibha Patil even as the NDA had Bhairon Singh Shekhawat as its candidate. Mr Raut said that Mr Thackeray was minutely observing the situation arising out of the stalemate over the deal.
He will decide at right time, Mr Raut added. The Sena is yet to receive any call from the Congress or the UPA constituents. Political analyst believe that NCP chief Sharad Pawar will play a major role in getting the Sena on UPA board should the Congress fails short of numbers in Lok Sabha.
Shiv Sena had recently made its stand on the issue clear when its mouthpiece Saamna lambasted Left parties for their opposition to the nuclear deal. An editorial in the party mouthpiece read, There is no doubt that the Indo-US deal will be in the interest of India. This is a fact which everyone knows except the Left parties.
Dubbing the Lefts as red monkeys, Saamna had said they are taking a hardline stand against the Indo-US deal only to keep China in good humour at the cost of Indias development. The editorial pointed out that Left parties go out of the way to please China even if it is not in Indias best interests. The pain of the Left parties stems from their excessive love for China, which makes them oppose any move which will strengthen India by improving ties with the US, the editorial stated.
