Security lapse not ruled out in Assam: Union Home Secy

Union home secretary Madhukar Gupta on Thursday did not rule out a possible security lapse by the Assam government in averting the deadly bomb blasts across the state.

NEW DELHI: Union home secretary Madhukar Gupta on Thursday did not rule out a possible security lapse by the Assam government in averting the deadly bomb blasts across the state.

On being asked if the blasts, coming as they did during the festive season when the terror outfits are known to strike, could be blamed on a security or intelligence lapse, Mr Gupta replied: We will look into that.

It was festival season...the state was on high alert, he said adding that the possibility of a security lapse would be examined. As of now, he said, the focus would be on the Central and state agencies pooling their resources and intelligence to probe all possible angles to the blasts in Guwahati, Kokrajhar, Barpeta and Bongaigon. The Centre has sought a detailed report from the state government.

Mr Gupta said two Central teams have been deputed to visit Assamone comprising NSG experts who would examine the explosive material used and another team of senior officers who would also investigate the possible planning that may have gone into carrying out the blasts.

The Centre also issued an advisory on Thursday afternoon asking the state to step up vigil at all the vulnerable areas including crowded markets, vital installations and VIP areas.

Mr Gupta said the security along the international border in Assam was also being strengthened. The state has not asked for additional central forces.
