GUWAHATI: The police in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and the army will hold regular meetings to coordinate their efforts to target militant hideouts and passage route along the border between the two north-eastern states.

Militants, after striking in Assam, escape to the Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts of Arunachal Pradesh and from there move to their hideouts in Myanmar. The three districts share border with Assam. The coordination meetings and sharing of information to deal with them was suggested by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

Pallab Bhattacharyya, Assam’s director-general of police (in -charge of special branch), told ET: “On December 15, we had a meeting where the superintendents of police of the bordering districts from both sides participated.”

From the army, the general officer commanding of the second mountain division attended it. The police have for long been willing to set up such a mechanism to share information about the movement of militants, he said. There has recently been a spurt in abduction cases and demand of ransom by militants in Upper Assam.
