Security beefed up at Delhi Metro; checking intensified

NEW DELHI: Security on the Delhi Metro and its premises across the National Capital Region was tightened on Wednesday with frisking of passengers being intensified and the frequency of sweeping of stations increased following a blast outside the Delhi High Court.

Immediately after terror struck the national capital, Central Industrial Security Force, which guards the Delhi Metro and its premises, deployed additional personnel as a precautionary measure.

"Security has been beefed up. Manual frisking of passengers have been intensified and thorough checking of baggage is being carried out through X-ray machines. Every precautionary step has been taken," CISF spokesman Rohit Katiyar said.

He said the frequency of anti-sabotage checks at stations have been increased and mandatory checks are being carried out.

Commuters on the Delhi Metro have to undergo checking by CISF personnel before they enter the ticketing area of a station.

In the wake of the blast that killed 11 people, the checking has been intensified and additional personnel have been deployed.

CISF personnel have been posted in plain clothes at stations to keep an eye on people who behave in suspicious manner and checking is being done through CCTV footages at all stations.

"Quick Reaction Teams have been deployed at certain places with usual armed support," Katiyar said.

Delhi Metro has 139 stations in the NCR and over 20 lakh people travel on it every day.
