Secretary Home and political department, Babulal Sarma appointed as coordinator of National Register of Citizens

Guwahati: Secretary Home and political department, Babulal Sarma is appointed as coordinator of National Register of Citizens (NRC) till the newly appointed coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma is back from the leave.

A 1986 batch Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Hitesh Dev Sarma was appointed as coordinator NRC recently however Sarma is on leave.

A senior official in Assam government, who do not want to be named told ET, “ Babulal Sarma will officiate as coordinator for sometime till Hitesh is back.”


He added, “ This is necessitated as there are some administrative issues which needs to with dealt with.”

The Supreme Court has earlier ordered transfer of NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela following which Assam government started haunt to select the new NRC coordinator.

Dev Sarma had earlier worked in the NRC directorate. He involved in the initial works of NRC which started in 2013.

The next process of sending letters to those left out of final NRC with reason for their non-inclusion and process of moving to Foreigners tribunal is expected to start soon.

The final NRC was published on August 31 last found a total of 3, 11, 21,004 persons eligible for inclusion in the registry leaving out 19, 06,657 persons.
